11:39 BJP 115 Congress: 58 others : 4

9:50 am: Half way mark reached in style. According to NDTV, its BJP-106, Congress-54, Others-4.

9: 40 am: BJP heads towards the half-way mark with leads in 91 seats out of the 182 seats in its kitty. But was that even the goal? No. The magic figure is that of 117 seats that Modi's BJP snagged in the 2007 elections. Anything less than that will be termed as a disappointing show by BJP. Side note: Congress has leads in 50 seats.

9:30 am: So what have the pundits been saying about these early results? As almost all of them had predicted a BJP win, nobody's surprised by the party's lead. But the Congress's improved showing since 2007 is bound to give them a moral boost, it seems.But they still have the sting in their words. Congress leader Jagdambika Pal said this on Modi: He has been doing his marketing for five years. He has contested three elections and all three with different motives. First was Hindutva, then vibrant Gujarat and this time his issue was development. But people of Gujarat can't see any development thus now they want change.

9:20am: Chief Minister Narendra Modi is on the winning track in his constituency Maninagar with 8380 votes, taking the lead over Congress' candidate and wife of former IPS office Sanjiv Bhatt, Shweta Bhatt.

9:00 am: BJP has galloped ahead of Congress and Gujarat Parivartan Party(GPP). NDTV says BJP is leading in 59 seats with Congress leads in 34. Other parties claim lead in 4 seats.

8: 45 am: According to CNN IBN, BJP has taken the early lead. BJP is leading in 15 seats while the Congress in 8.

8:40 am: The counting of postal ballots has begun for both Gujarat while EVMs will open at 8.30am
